This study examined the relationship between ESG maturity and the language used in the annual reports of Brazilian credit unions (Cresol, Sicoob Credicaf, and Sicredi) from 2022 to 2024. A hybrid methodology was employed, combining manual content analysis (based on GRI and SASB scores) with Natural Language Processing (NLP) for sentiment analysis. The findings reveal heterogeneous progress within the sector. Sicredi emerged as a consistent leader, characterized by robust governance and an optimistic, technically oriented narrative. Cresol showed structured growth, whereas Sicoob Credicaf experienced fluctuations in maturity, suggesting that reporting inconsistencies can undermine organizational legitimacy. NLP analysis confirmed a strong correlation between positive communication sentiment and the Social pillar, reinforcing the intrinsic identity of the cooperative business model. The study concludes that ESG maturity is vital for institutional stability. The institutionalization of sustainable practices and narrative consistency are essential for building credibility. Ultimately, the proposed hybrid approach proves to be a replicable and effective model for multifaceted assessments of the ESG journey within the credit union sector.
