Abstract

The editorial “Guidelines for Conducting Field Research: Its Origins and Practical Application,” published in the Revista de Administração, Sociedade e Inovação (RASI), offers a comprehensive analysis of the field research method, its multiple approaches, and theoretical-methodological implications. The text begins by noting that many graduate students face difficulties in selecting and applying research methods, prompting the journal to publish thematic editorials on various methodological strategies. In this issue, the authors explore field research, defining it as an investigative method based on data collection in real-world contexts through direct interaction with the phenomena under study. The editorial presents the main approaches associated with field research—such as qualitative research, participant observation, ethnography, and clinical inquiry—discussing their specific contributions, practical challenges, and epistemological dilemmas. Among the advantages of the method are the authenticity of the data and its capacity to capture the complexity of social interactions. The authors also highlight potential pitfalls, including researcher bias and the limited generalizability of findings. The text further emphasizes the tension between academic and practitioner interests, suggesting collaborative approaches as a way to overcome such conflicts. Finally, it discusses the practical steps of conducting field research in organizational settings, from problem formulation to data analysis and interpretation, reaffirming its essential role in generating applied and theoretically grounded knowledge.
